Bent Bluesman, sculptor and Hmm… festival curator Rod Cooper.
Rod will be performing on his incredible hand made stainless steel vessel at the big Hmm… gig at KIPL Sat 20th Aug 136 Roden Street, West Melbourne
He will also be conducting a master class at the same venue on the next day Sunday 21st Augest details on the Hmm… workshops page. Come along and make your very own resonant sound sculpture.
Melbourne based musician and artist, Rod Cooper started as a student of sculpture who integrated automation and sound into his work. In very little time, the idea of sculpture faded into the background and he was making his own electro-acoustic devices. Amplified string instruments often modelled on the basic structure of Banjo, Hurdy-gurdy, or Zither, or coil-based tone-generators.
Like Grainger and Partch, Rod also has a keen interest in the music of South East Asia, especially the Javanese Gamelan Orchestra. He sought out and worked with contemporary Indonesian sound artists in Yogyakarta.
Touring extensively has taught him the virtue of the small light instrument. His recent tour of the USA was done with a small modified Banjo that fused the sonic quality of bluegrass into his trademark experimental music.
